Bar model(模型图/画条形图)是新加坡数学的招牌方法。 The bar model is the signature method of Singapore maths. It is not "another way to solve it" — it turns a word problem into a picture you can see. When a child is stuck, it is usually not the arithmetic; it is not understanding what is being asked. This page is for parents: how to draw alongside your child at home, and which well-meant habits backfire.
Why Singapore teaches drawing
Primary children are still developing abstract reasoning. "My brother has 3 times as much as me, and together we have $48" is unreadable as an equation for a P4 child. Drawn as two bars, "3 times" becomes "three equal segments" — obvious at a glance. The model is the bridge from concrete to abstract; when letters for unknowns arrive in P6, and equations are taught properly in secondary school, those same bars quietly become x.
There are really only two models
Parents often assume there are many varieties. There are two, and everything later is a combination of them:
| 类型Type | 什么时候用When to use | 长什么样What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
Part-wholePart-whole |
Several parts make up a whole, or part of a whole is taken away. Cue words: altogether, in total, left. One bar cut into segments |
Two quantities compared — more than, less than, how many times. Cue words: more than, fewer than, times as many. Two bars stacked, aligned at the left |
💡 Let the child decide "is this putting together, or comparing?" — getting this right solves half the problem. Get it wrong and no drawing will help.
The four steps
Read it, then say it. Cover the question and have the child retell it in their own words: who has what, what is being compared. If they cannot, they have not understood it — do not start drawing yet.
Draw the bars, roughly. One bar per quantity. Stack and left-align for comparison; segment a single bar for part-whole.
Label what you know, mark what you want. Write known numbers above their segments and put a question mark on the thing being asked for.
Read the equation off the picture. The number sentence should come out of the drawing, not be fitted to it afterwards.
Work one through
Mei Ling and her brother have $48 altogether. Her brother has 3 times as much as she does. How much does Mei Ling have?
Step 1: it has "altogether" and "times" — draw the comparison, then bracket the total.
Step 2: one unit for Mei Ling; three equal units below for her brother.
Step 3: bracket both bars on the right and write 48; put "?" on Mei Ling's unit.
Step 4: the picture shows 4 units = 48 → 1 unit = 48 ÷ 4 = $12.
Note the last step: "4 units" was counted, not calculated. That is the whole value of the model — it turns "3 times" into countable units.
How one method grows from P1 to P6
What changes |
|---|---|
Simple add/subtract on one segmented bar. Numbers are small enough to do mentally — keep drawing anyway; you are building the habit, not getting the answer. |
Multiples and "more/fewer than" appear; thinking in units begins. |
Fractions, percentage, ratio and before-after problems all ride on the same picture; children who can draw save a great deal of time here. |
Five things parents get wrong
① Drawing it for them. They copy, look fine, then fail the next question. Better to let them draw it wrong, then look together at what does not match.
② Insisting it look neat. The model is scratch work, not an art assignment. Ten minutes with a ruler is ten minutes of lost attention.
③ Skipping the drawing when the answer is obvious. Skip it in the lower levels and there is nothing to fall back on when fractions and ratio arrive — P1 to P4 is saving up for P5 and P6.
④ Jumping to "let x be…" equations. The syllabus only introduces letters for unknowns in P6, and only for the simplest linear equations with whole-number coefficients. "Let x be…" is faster today, but the exam expects working — and the child loses the ability to check themselves. A wrong picture is visible; a wrong equation is not.
⑤ Checking only the answer. A right answer with a muddled picture collapses on the next question. Ask "why did you draw this part like that?"
What to say when they are stuck
Is this putting things together, or comparing them?"
Which bar is longest? Why?"
Which part is the question asking for? Point to it."
How many units in total? What is one unit?"
⚠️ All questions, no answers. The moment the child says "oh!" is the moment they learned it — no amount of explaining from you will produce that sound.
